My basement pillory

Unread post by inallwaysbound »

Not sure if this should go here, its a DIY story, sort of.
After lots of thinking about it, I finally did it. I have a room in my basement that is not quite finished. The door opening is still just rough framed, so I decided to put it to use. Took some 3/4" MDF that we had laying around from various cat tree projects, cut it to the size of the door opening (36") with a height of 12". Drew a line down the center. Took a rough guesstimate of where my wrists could most comfortably be at the sides of my neck. Marked this all out on the rough board, I have a full set of hole saws, so I just took out my leather wrist cuffs, compared them to a saw, and cut those out. For the neck opening, I tried a fabric tape measure, but worried it would be too tight. So I rummaged around, and found an old posture collar, fit it a bit loosely to my neck, marked the whole the buckle was in. Compared that to my hole saws, and lucked out, it nicely matched the 6" one. Cut that hole out. Now I was getting anxious. This was starting to look pretty interesting. Now for the scary part. I took a skilsaw, and cut it right down the middle. The blade I have in there is approx. 1/8" wide, which actually takes away some noticeable diameter of the holes. Luckily I had accounted for that. The cut came out good. Once that was done, I took my router with a 1/2" roundover bit, and smoothed the edges of the holes. Should have gone smaller, it made a small point in the center of the holes, because of the 1/2 + 1/2 = 1", and my material was 3/4" thick. So some hand sanding was in order. Got that done, and kind of held it all up and put my neck and hands in. Uh-oh, this is going to work! Now it was time to attach it to the door opening.

So I got it in there and leveled everything up. Attached temporarily with some 3" sheetrock screws. Instantly I could see that it was going to be a bit flimsy. So I took some old 2x4s I had, and made some vertical guides for the top half, and some full length stiffeners for the top and bottom pieces. Now it was really rugged feeling. My wife wasn't home yet, so I got myself into it for a test fit. Wow. I have never actually been in a pillory, it is one of the most secure feelings I have ever had. I feel really bad for people who actually got put in these for days.

Once I was done playing, I decided that it should lock. I have tons of "bondage" hardware I've been collecting since I can remember. I dug some long shear pins out, that have holes along the length, just so happens that the little Brinks luggage locks that I have so many of fit perfect.. Drilled a hole vertically through the top half, that fit the pins fairly tight. Continued it into the bottom for about an inch. Then I took the top half off, and used a larger drill bit to enlarge the openings in the bottom. A quick batch of JB quick weld in the bottom holes, and I pushed the pins right in it. Wiped off the excess, and put the top back on, over the pins. After half an hour, I couldn't budge the pins. Stuck a couple locks in, and nothing would move. Now I was getting a little nervous. There was still some time before my wife got home from work, so I added some self-adhesive foam rubber weatherstripping to the outside of the holes for the neck and wrists. This made them fit nice and tight, and a lot more comfortably. Finally, my wife got home, we checked the new toy all out, and found out that with me in the way, she had a really hard time getting the top to slide straight in, without binding in the door opening. Arrgh. So now I need to sand the sides down some more, or redesign my vertical guides. I'll post some pictures of this as soon as Im allowed to put pics up. Its rough looking being MDF and lumber, but Im planning on doing a couple furniture quality ones from maple. Ive always wanted one of those doggy style benches, and think a nice stained and poly finish on finely grained hardwood would be awesome. Its just a little hard to hide "furniture" like this when its that big. Thanks for checking out my build, Ill do lot more if theres any interest.

That sounds like a lot of fun :)

I have often considered making some more, and more specialised, bondage furniture but never seem to get around to it so make do with things such as saw horses, folding beds etc. Your post may just prompt me to get off my bottom, thanks.

PS. A pic would be great - you could always put it on a website (Dropbox?) and post a link here.

I did a short trial period in it. (see: maid in a pillory) Works great, now I need to make a nicer looking one. All done, I have less than an hour of actual work in this one, a nice one will probably take 3 or 4 without finish on it. Im going to check and see if I can get pictures to upload, I tried creating an Imgur account, but it doesn't seem to finish the registration process for some reason. Just ends at the "I am not a robot" part. With the free time Ive had lately, I think there will be some somewhat fancy things being built in the attic...
