Ever had a story get away from you?

Unread post by boundBinder »

So, I'm writing a story for my own enjoyment(also as therapy/catharsis, owing to situations in my own life that are frustrating and depressing me, as well as rendering me 'bondage-free'), and I had intended it to be strictly 'porn', that catered to not only our shared kink, but also to my own, personal "soft spots" that get my motor running. Once I started writing it, I found that it was developing more than I had originally intended and that I was fleshing out the characters to be "real", as opposed to simple "bondage paper dolls". Then, I read FreedomOfRestriction's intro to his story "Belonging" in the story section, and wondered if this happens often to other authors?

How about it? Any of you ever start jotting down a story "just to get you hot", whose characters end up taking on a life of their own?

When I read story, at a certain point, I stop seeing the words, and start watching a movie...
Now, to answer your question... yes...
I have written a few stories here and there... After I get started, the same thing happens...
It is like I tune into a station and all I do is write what I see...
When that happens, not even I know where the story is headed... Sometimes the story runs into a corner
and there is no way out but to back up a paragraph, or two, and get it back on track...
All advice is checked, re-checked and verified to be questionable...
Don't ask, we both wont understand the answer...

That's good to know, because I'm now up to 17 pages, and still only a few minor bondage references.

A similar answer. I start with an idea or notion and let it develop as ideas come. Sometimes it stops never to be finished, and sometimes it flows so fast I can't keep up. The problem comes when you have to "force yourself" to finish or conclude - then the result can be dispointing all round.

Oh yes, this is a big problem I've had/continue to have. I started out with some flat "paper dolls" as you so well put it, now though... I wast to share their whole damn lives. I "know" them better than I know my neighbors. I've been fighting hard to keep them in line to my general outline but that's sometimes hard to do/leads you to dead ends and you have to be willing to back up and let them drive a bit till you're back on a road. Hell, the outline I have now is hugely different from what I started with, and many of the changes came as natural results of thinking how these "people" would act.

I find, even if you end up ditching it fully, it never hurts to draw out a rough outline of where you want things to go. Then as you're writing if new or different ideas come to mind try rolling with it. It might mean altering your plan, or it might lead nowhere and you have to go back a page or two to start over. As I see it, especially if this is for you and you aren't thinking of posting, who cares how long it is? If you like what you're writing who cares how long it takes to get to the bondage?

I might be a hypocrite offering that advice though so take that with a grain of salt. Because that's exactly something I worry about, but I am also posting mine up and want people to like them, or at least finish reading them. I write partly for myself but I also like producing something other people can enjoy reading like I enjoyed writing it.

I can relate to this. I have a dozen (non-bondage)stories that I never finished, and never will.

Yep. That's where I'm at, now. :P Currently 34 pages and still going, and STILL only a couple of passing references to bondage, or kink of any kind.

I have only written an outline to a story once, and I never finished that tale. For this one, it was initially supposed to be a half-dozen paragraphs of "hot bondage", so I shouldn't have had to bother with an outline. Now it's...not. Originally, I was considering posting it here, or on Gromet's main site, but now, my wife is poking me in the ribs to finish it with an eye on getting it actually published.

We see eye to eye on this. I crave critique on my work, and hope against hope that my audience--whoever they may be--likes it.
