What do you think of your own stories?

I started writing stories just for my own entertainment- sort of 'homemade porn!' I've progressed to wanting to write nicely & to entertain others- a tojo story is in progress- stay tuned.My question is- to put it delicately- do your own stories make you hot?? Do other people's work better, because it wasn't you that wrote them? I sort of gauge my own stories (none published) on how entertaining I find them. It's rare that my own stories make my heart beat faster, they're just entertaining really. They're 'OK', but not 'wow this is great' sort of thing. When I write non- BDSM stuff, I really like what I write & am proud of it- I hope to do the same with BDSM stories someday.tojo

I get very excited as I write them, but I guess the fun soon fades.  I read them again every now and then just to see what it was that I wrote, but it's as if I use up the erotic content in the process of writing them. I get in so deep I don't need to go to that particular fantasy again. Does that make sense?

I have been about to re-read a few of my stories and have them effectme the same as a fresh story from another author would.  I oftenfind myself, as jezzibelle described, getting very excited to the pointof distraction when writing new stories.  I don't really see thatas a bad thing, because just like a new story, I am imagining thescenario for the first time and it excites me as I hope it will others.

As my two stories were accounts of real life scenarios I was quite excited when I wrote them, reliving the experience so to say.I have read them a couple of times since and they did make me smile and a feel little warm, but now I'm looking to write again soon.Until then I will continue to read other peoples excellent work.tiedash....

I get a lot of enjoyment reading some, but not all, of my stories.  My early ones, probably the first six or so, are now quite embaressing to read (maybe I should go back and re-write them).  But I do get enjoyment reading my own stuff, mostly because I like how my mind can come up with wierd and enjoyable scenarios for me to enjoy.

i don't tend to re-read my own stories, since i normally write themwith a specific audience in mind.  the core idea / fantasy that iuse for a story stays with me, and i will revisit it, think about it,and enjoy it every now and then due to this focusing on an audience i am very motivated by theresponses i get to my writing.  if / when i write i write both formyself and for the audience, since if you only write for your audienceyou had better be getting paid for it, since it does not sound like funas a general statement to active authors, i have said before and i willsay this again, write first for *yourself*!  if you are relying onfeedbacn and encouragement from posting online then you are likely toend up disapointed and dishartened.so go out there, re-read your own stories, and bask in the sexy fun of it all

I enjoy reading my own stories, though I tend to avoid the ones wherethey didn't turn out as well as I'd like.  Granted, it's not likeI've a large collection, but I wouldn't have written any of the "Lydiaand Me" series if their themes didn't appeal to me.So I'll enjoy the occasional re-read, and perhaps even get a bit moreout of it because there's a bit of a thrill in having it posted to asite for all to consume...

Thanks guys for all the helpful comments- I'm pretty well finished the first part of my first story to be actually read by others (hopefully). I've written plenty before, but this time I'm finding it quite hot to write....I guess that answers my question.As far as rewriting the stories you don't like- come on! Make us new writers feel completely inadequate! It's encouraging to see the 'experts' style improving & the stories getting better. Bit of a bummer seeing those who just write so bloody beautifully right from the start! Like watching a stunt rider performing when you can hardly get the front wheel of your bike off the ground!tojo

Do my own stories make me hot? Hehehe. It is a difficult one.Depends if i'm going for mindless, gratifying indulgence or writingsomething I consider more 'suitable' for an online audience - the samegoes for my artwork.Obviously I don't write/draw things that bore me! Though I haveattempted a few short stories (one was going to be for Gromet's Plazayears ago, incidentally) and never finished any! I'm moderately moresuccessful with the artwork I'm pleased to say, but that should bereserved for a related thread!My main problem has really been the extent of my sexual interests - how'full-on' they are sometimes and how they might include interests manypeople wouldn't find appealing.That and horrendous writer's block, hahaha. It's a combination of unusual or diverse kinks that work for me... I guess I'm in the right place here, in that case!

Since many of my olders stories were rewrites of one I liked to better build on my likes I still love to pull out the old ones form time to time.But now my real desire isn't in the older ones but writing new ones. And I get a lot more writing done when I can't jump up every twn minutes to relieve the building desire the stories cause. cagedsgt

I usually base each story on a specific fantasy of mine, so the idea is very exciting when I start.  As I get into the work of writing and rewriting the story, the fantasy fades and is replaced by the fun of developing the characters and getting the words right.  I sometimes reread my stories.  If I wait long enough, I react to it like I react to any new story.  Re-reading a story you posted several years ago and finding a error is a major bummer!On the subject of re-reading: when you write a story, get it more or less in finished form then set it aside for a couple weeks.  When you go back to polish it, you'll see it more like your readers will and you'll see the spots that need work much easier.  That technique, and many more excellent tips, can be found in Stephen King's book, On Writing.  It should be on every writer's bookshelf, pro or amateur.Good point, feline, on writing for yourself.  If you aren't getting paid, you may as well enjoy yourself.  Bondage readers (and probably internet readers in general) are notoriously uncommunicative with their feedback.  This site is an exception in the quality and quantity of discussion that goes on about writing.  This discussion is one of the main reasons Gromet's is on my "visit daily" list.  OBTW, I have gotten paid for writing technical manuals.  I enjoyed the subject matter so I enjoyed the writing, even though I wasn't writing for me.  Deadlines were a pain, however.dungeonmouse38673.9876041667

Very true Darkraptor- I can't push that point enough, people write stories for nothing, basically to entertain & to give something back. It's essential to get feedback. It made me more determined to keep writing when I got a heap of good feedback, otherwise I wouldn't have been so keen to continue. Some of the stories I've read recently have been brilliant. I find myself quite aroused by my own stories, usually after setting them aside for a few months and going back to them. I always write for my own tastes, and revisiting my old stories is always a thrill.
