Posting question
I'm a new member and responded to a few posts.
Some were publicly posted and others weren't and I don't understand why.
My responses were innocuous and don't know why some were posted and
others not.
It has been about two days since I last posted. Does this make a difference?

Re: Posting question
I hate to give away "trade secrets" here but since this has come up before....
Like most online forums, this one has had problems with "spam" posts in the past. People come here to read about kink and bondage, not "Here to buy designer shoes/handbags? Click HERE!"
One of our "anti-spam" countermeasures involves the manual approval/disapproval of a new member's first few posts before they appear for everyone to see. If the new member is an actual kinkster, it only takes a few posts until they're "automatically approved" for every post after the first ones. (I honestly don't know the actual number, which seems to vary slightly, but it's usually between 3 and 10.)
If the new member is a spammer (and we had HUNDREDS this past winter) we can disapprove the post(s) and ban that member, whereupon they often make five new accounts and continue their stupid little game.
End result: new member's first few posts are delayed for as much as a day, but nobody else has to read all the spammy sales posts!
I just approved a few of your posts tonight, so they should all be showing up now!

As far as I can tell from the moderator logs, the only posts which haven't been approved in the past few days have been "duplicate posts," which also often happens with new members. "Why isn't my post showing up?" they ask themselves and post a second or third time. Generally we approve the first one unless the second or third one has additional information in it.ampoule wrote:I'm a new member and responded to a few posts.

Re: Posting question
A lot of forums do this with new members, by the way. It might be worth adding some a paragraph to the signup screen to point it out. It may even cut down on the spam once the spammers are told up-front.

Sounds good, but who reads that sign-up stuff anyways???
All advice is checked, re-checked and verified to be questionable...

Not a bad idea but....seidenki wrote:A lot of forums do this with new members, by the way. It might be worth adding some a paragraph to the signup screen to point it out. It may even cut down on the spam once the spammers are told up-front.
...it seems like most people ignore that and other important threads like "Forum Rules" and "Forum Posting Guidelines."DarkLizerd wrote:Sounds good, but who reads that sign-up stuff anyways???
I'd love to see some pop-up windows that divert people off the site when they click "yes" repeatedly without reading them.

Re: Posting question
Actually...
Adjust the wording so that it ends with....
".... I have read the guidelines fully and I understand that by clicking "NO" that I have not skipped anything..."
Or hide that in the middle somewhere...
Then, when they hit "yes" they are kicked out...

That's called a Dark Pattern. Probably appropriate for a web forum sign-up page, though.stephanie_cd wrote:Ooooh -- I LIKE this! (We need a "thumbs up" emoticon!)DarkLizerd wrote:Adjust the wording so that it ends with....
