And have a couple of pairs in different sizes. The smaller ones will be easier to get between skin and tie but I've twice seen blades shear off on cheaper brands, once on a heavy wire and once on a cable tie, so have at least one spare and a larger pair on standby.
Or get the releasable type which have a small, usually fully or partially recessed, tang that lifts the ratchet (exact mechanisms vary). Depending on placement they're generally too fiddly for the captive to operate while bound even if they can reach it.
And like the previous poster says, don't even think of using a cutting blade of any sort to cut them - one or other participant will end up leaking.
