Sounds like its thermoplastic.

The edge of the tube looks thin and potentialy sharp. This really should be either a rolled edge, or a ring welded to it.

How about a solenoid catch that has 2 external contacts for 9v battery?

The contacts could be part of a metal applique or a nailhead design.

Turns clear when maleable.

Put the spacer on AFTER the cage. That makes escape less likely.

You may have to use a longer pin because the spacer sits in a hollow spot.

Slip a length of hose over the bigger ring to reduce it.
